SH GALLERY is pleased to present ‘Self Portrait’, a solo exhibition by Ryo Koizumi.
‘ The painting may become a window through which I project myself through the process of drawing symbols and colouring one brushstroke at a time between the conscious and the unconscious.’ – Ryo Koizumi
The exhibition consists of new works from Koizumi’s ‘enso’ series, which he has been working on since 2019.
Koizumi is a self-taught painter, and his life in Fukushima, where he continues to base his work, the nature around him, and the influence of his family of gardeners and calligraphy have led him to explore oriental thinking and abstract painting deeply connected to his own identity.
The new ‘enso’ series of paintings are done in oil paint on canvas and use glazing, a traditional technique in Western painting.
The painting is covered with many layers of clear paint, which gives it a deep, clear colouring, blurring the boundary between figure and landscapes.
If you follow the symbols that are repeated over and over again, there are differences there one by one, and you can feel the presence of people.
It is also possible to find Oriental thoughts on a screen that is Western in substance.
Zen calligraphy in the form of Enso(circular forms), mandalas, wavy sand patterns in Karesansui (dry landscapes), and Oriental thought, which places great emphasis on circularity.
It is written as ‘’Enso(circular window)‘’ and means a window that reflects your own soul.
As the title of this exhibition, Self Portrait, shows, for Koizumi, painting is not a window into a concrete image, but a window through which he explores and reflects his own existence through the process.
We look forward to welcoming everyone.

KOIZUMI has been working as a calligrapher since 2016, and in 2019 he developed his “enso” series of paintings, in which the basic lines of calligraphy are drawn continuously in a circular pattern.
In the “enso” series, I was inspired by one of the Zen calligraphic works, Enso. In Zen, Enso represents emptiness, unity, infinity, and a state of enlightenment, but the interpretation is left to the viewer, and is said to reflect the mind of the viewer.
KOIZUMI’s repetition of primitive symbols in relation to himself seems to indicate our sense of the world in which abstraction and figuration are becoming unclear.
Koizumi began working on the “Halo” series in 2021.
“Halo” series embraced the contingency of color, making the pure visual image of light seen in the aerial exist on the canvas as an abstract painting.
The “Halo” series expresses a new level of Koizumi’s work that is full of the power of light, while hiding the oriental mystique inherited from the “enso” series.
