この度、SH GALLERYでは MASATO YAMAGUCHI × FUKI COMMITTEE「REMIXED BY｣を開催致します。
東京風紀委員会（以下風紀）に出会ったのは2022の初頭の頃だった。風紀は初期、ストリートを監視すべく現れた在波うゆが都内の電柱、看板に「ダメよ。ゼッタイ。」と記されたステッカーをサイトスペシフィックなアプローチでスラップする活動が彼らの世界観の起点となっていた。その後2022年の年末の初の個展 “ACTIVITY REPORT“ にて初めて彼らの絵画作品を目にすることになった。ストリートの中に存在していた在波うゆが現実のギャラリーに現れたのは現代アートにARG（Alternate Reality Game 代替現実ゲーム [注 1]）的な衝動を持ち込んだように記憶している。
その後自分が企画する ART FEAR ® TOKYO, ART FEAR ® SEOUL, 大阪芸術祭と彼らと自分の関わりは深くなり、今回のコラボレーション展へと自然に展開していった。
本タイトルである “REMIXED BY” はまさに自分と風紀の職能的な性格の一致と共通するカルチャーが生んだタイトルだと思う。彼らとの制作は驚くほどシームレスに進行していくのだ。我々はシチュエーションごとにそれぞれ立場を変え、ある時は自分がアーティストとして風紀にREMIXされ、ある時は自分がアーティストである風紀をREMIXする。あまりにもスムーズに制作が進む中で自分はある時、自分達にはREMIX カルチャーの土台があったことに気づいた。1990年代後期から2000年代に隆盛をしたREMIXブームではオリジナルよりリミキサーのほうが注目を浴び、自分はそのカルチャーに強い影響を受けていた。逆に風紀の警視庁のキャッチコピーのサンプリングする皮肉に満ちた世界観は2010年代にインターネットアンダーグラウンドで生まれた VAPOR WAVE [注 2] 的な、風刺と郷愁に満ちたREMIX性を感じる。
ある意味、今自分達が向かっている挑戦とは、2020年代における、新たなREMIXの変容を表現しているのかもしれない。メインビジュアルに起用した “UYU remixed by M.Y” では東京風紀委員会の委員長在波うゆに自分のアイコニックな表現である自撮りエフェクトを追加している。背景のカモフラはこちらで描き、風紀が在波うゆをハンドペイントで描く。最後のエフェクト部分を自分がエアブラシで追加する。ローファイとハイファイが交錯し、デジタルデータとコットンのキャンバスを駆使し、互いのエッセンスとタスクをパスしながら1mm以下のディティールを精巧に仕上げていっている。本展では、これらの作品群に加え、風紀の “Re:REAL” シリーズ3点、自分の ”SELFY”シリーズ3点 トレカペインティング1点の計12点の新作を発表する。コラボを記念したグッズも完成次第リリースしていく予定だ。
展示まで10日を切り、いままさに制作を進めている最中ではあるが、自分としても本展が2024の年明けに相応しいエキサイティングなショーになるとわくわくしている。ぜひ都内に来ることがあれば、原宿 SH GALLERY まで足を運び本展を楽しんでいただければ嬉しく思う。
[注 1] 代替現実ゲーム（だいたいげんじつゲーム、英: alternate reality game）は、日常世界をゲームの一部として取り込んで現実と仮想を交差させる体験型の遊びの総称である。
インターネット、テレビ、雑誌、ラジオ、ポスター、映画、FAXサービス、携帯電話、携帯ゲーム機など様々なプラットフォームの一部もしくは全てを通して提供される断片的な情報を、不特定多数のプレイヤーが協力して情報を主体的に集めながらゲームの進行へ影響を与えることで、1つの大きなストーリーが明らかになってゆくという特徴を持つ。例えば、フィクションであったルパン３世が現実世界にある渋谷のモヤイ象を盗む、など。
[注 2] VAPOR WAVE : ヴェイパーウェイヴ（またはベイパーウェーブ、蒸気波、英: Vaporwave）は、2010年代初頭にWeb上の音楽コミュニティから生まれた音楽のジャンルである。過去に大量生産されて忘れ去られた人工物や技術への郷愁、消費資本主義や大衆文化、1980年代のヤッピー文化、ニューエイジへの批評や風刺として特徴づけられる。基本的にパソコンとDAWを用いて、素材の加工と切り貼りだけで制作される。

SH GALLERY is pleased to present MASATO YAMAGUCHI x FUKI COMMITTEE “REMIXED BY”
It was around the beginning of 2022 that I met the FUKI COMMITTEE (“Fuki”).In the early days of public morals, ” ALPHA UYU（在波うゆ）” appeared to monitor the streets and put up signs on utility poles and billboards in Tokyo saying,”No. Don’t do it at all.(Dame yo. Zettai.)” The starting point of their worldview was the activity of slapping stickers with a site-specific approach.Later, at the end of 2022, we saw their canvas works for the first time in their first solo exhibition “ACTIVITY REPORT”.
I remember that the appearance of ALPHA UYU, who had existed in the street, in a reality gallery brought an ARG (Alternate Reality Game [Note 1]) impulse to contemporary art.My relationship with the people I was working with grew deeper with the ART FEAR ® TOKYO, ART FEAR ® SEOUL and Osaka Art Festival that I organised, and naturally developed into the collaborative exhibition that I am now presenting here.
The title of this project, “Remixed By”, is exactly the result of the match between myself and Fuki’s professional personalities and the culture we share in common. The production process with them is surprisingly seamless.
We change our position in each situation, sometimes I REMIX Fuki as an artist, and at other times Fuki REMIXes me as an artist. The production went so smoothly that I realised at one point that we had the basis for a REMIX culture. During the remix boom that flourished in the late 1990s and 2000s, remixers attracted more attention than originals, and I was strongly influenced by this culture. Conversely, the ironic worldview of Fuki’s sampling of the Metropolitan Police catchphrase feels like a VAPOR WAVE [Note 2] style of satire and nostalgic remixing that emerged in the internet underground of the 2010s.
In a sense, the challenge we are facing now may represent the transformation of a new REMIX in the 2020s. The main visual “UYU remixed by M.Y” shows FUKI COMMITTEE chairman “ALPHA UYU” with his iconic selfie effect. The camouflage on the background is drawn on this side, while Fuki hand paints ALPHA UYU. The last effect part is added by me with my airbrush.Lo-fi and hi-fi intermingle, using digital data and cotton canvases, passing each other’s essence and tasks to elaborate details of less than 1 mm.In addition to these works, a total of 12 new works will be shown at the exhibition, including three pieces from Fuki’s “Re:REAL” series, three pieces from my “SELFY” series and one trekker painting. Merchandise commemorating the collaboration will be released as soon as it is completed.
With less than 10 days to go until the exhibition, I am in the middle of the production process, but I am also excited that this exhibition will be an exciting show befitting the beginning of the year 2024. [Note 1] Alternate reality game is a generic term for experiential play that intersects reality and virtuality by incorporating the everyday world as part of the game. The game is played by an unspecified number of players, who work together to collect fragmentary information provided through some or all of a variety of platforms, including the internet, television, magazines, radio, posters, films, fax services, mobile phones and handheld game consoles, to proactively collect information and influence the progression of the game, The game is characterised by the fact that a major storyline is revealed as a result of the cooperation of an unspecified number of players who proactively gather information and influence the progress of the game.For example, the fictional Lupin III steals the Shibuya Moyai Elephant in the real world.
[Note 2] VAPOR WAVE is a musical genre that emerged from web-based music communities in the early 2010s. It is characterised as a nostalgia for the mass-produced and forgotten artefacts and technologies of the past, a critique and satire of consumer capitalism, popular culture, 1980s yuppie culture and the New Age. Basically, the work is produced using a computer and DAW, and is based solely on processing and cut-and-paste of material.

90年代東京の音楽・ファッション・デザインの影響を受けアーティストとして活動をする。「トランスリアリティ(現実の向こう側の現実)」をテーマに、 SELFY(自撮り)をする女性をクールキュートに描き現実とは何かを問い続けている。アパレルブランドX-girl や ReZARDとのコラボレーションを行 うなどボーダレスな活動をしている。
世界中の人がインターネット上でつながり、絶え間なくSNSと接続する現代において、リアルとバーチャルの境界はますます曖昧になり、ときに目の前にあるものよりディスプレイに映るもののほうがリアリティを持つことを山口の感覚は実に繊細に捉えている。LINEのメッセージで泣いてしまうこと、加工したセルフィーへの自己愛、バーチャルアイドルへの本気の恋、それらは日常にありふれていてもはや虚構とはいいがたい。山口はそうした時代性を背景として「トランスリアリティ（現実の向こう側の現実）」をテーマに作品をつくることで、現実とは何かを問い続けている。
YAMAGUCHI started his career as an artist influenced by the music, fashion and design of Tokyo in the 90’s. With the theme of “Trans-reality”, he continues to question what reality is by painting “Cool & Cute” selfie characters. He is doing borderless activities such as collaborating with the a pparel brand X-girl, ReZARD.
People all over the world are constantly connected on the Internet, to cross the boundaries between modern, real and virtual, and even to think, sometimes what is displayed o n the monitor may be closer to reality than everything in front of them. Through his work, Masato Yamaguchi delicately capt ures everything you are sure to feel familiar with.
People cry over messages from far-flung chat apps, complacent over intricately adjusted selfies, and wildly unrealistic fascination with virtual idols. They are so common in our daily lives that it is difficult to call them fictional works. Yamaguchi, in the context of this trend, created works with the theme of “trans- reality” (reality beyond the reality), thereby continue to question reality.
