SH GALLERY will present “Breath” a solo exhibition by Ryo Koizumi.
In this exhibition, Ryo Koizumi “Breath,” the viewer “faces the canvas with an awareness of breathing.
The painting draws you in, you become absent-minded, and the act of pressing the paint to the canvas, the act of a stroke being painted, is repeated. This is the theme of the exhibition.Ryo Koizumi explores the connection between the physical act of breathing and painting. In each series of works, the act of repetition in a circle is common to all of them.
The action of repetition in a circle, which has neither beginning nor end, transcends the axis of time and leaves traces of the moment of facing the canvas of the present.
In other words, it can be said to be an affirmation and record of the self that lives and breathes there.
In the “Halo” series, which he began working on in 2021, he has incorporated the contingency of color and developed them into paintings filled with the power of light, while retaining the oriental mystique of his previous work, the “enso” series.
We invite you to enjoy the experience of immersing yourself in the paintings as you feel the power emanating from the paintings and the streaks of light cutting through the heavy layers of paint stacked in a circular pattern.
Please come and visit the exhibition at SH GALLERY.

Born in Fukushima in 1985.
Koizumi has been working as a calligrapher since 2016, and in 2019 he developed his “enso” series of paintings, in which the basic lines of calligraphy are drawn continuously in a circular pattern.
In the “enso” series, I was inspired by one of the Zen calligraphic works, Enso.
In Zen, Enso represents emptiness, unity, infinity, and a state of enlightenment, but the interpretation is left to the viewer, and is said to reflect the mind of the viewer.
Koizumi’s repetition of primitive symbols in relation to himself seems to indicate our sense of the world in which abstraction and figuration are becoming unclear.
Koizumi began working on the “Halo” series in 2021.
“Halo” series embraced the contingency of color, making the pure visual image of light seen in the aerial exist on the canvas as an abstract painting.
The “Halo” series expresses a new level of Koizumi’s work that is full of the power of light, while hiding the oriental mystique inherited from the “enso” series.
“I interact with my work, building up the paint over and over again.
Then I express light through painting, through the elements of regularity, contingency, and color.
I hope that by coming face to face with my work, you will be able to feel its power to work on your emotions.”
( Comments from Ryo Koizumi’s “LUMINOUS” exhibition )
Koizumi seems to be trying to convey power and warmth to people by trapping light in his paintings. As a former gardener, Koizumi’s works have a unique oriental character with a strong abstract expression.
He is also active as a calligrapher, working on the title of the 2018 NHK Taiga Drama “Segodon”.
