SH GALLERY will present “LOCUS,” a solo exhibition by Ryo Koizumi.
LOCUS” will present Koizumi’s new series of paintings, “Locus” and “enso” series paintings.
“By leaving the process of physical repetition on the canvas, I want the audience to feel a sense of time and a sense of spatial encounter between the painting and the audience.”
(From Ryo Koizumi’s “LOCUS” exhibition comment)
Koizumi has been working as a calligrapher since 2016. In 2019, he released the “enso” series, in which he draws basic lines of calligraphy in a series of circles, and has since developed them as paintings while exploring composition and medium.
In “enso”, the paintings are created through repetitive actions that can be seen as a kind of training, influenced by oriental thoughts such as Zen.
The moment of now is recorded on the canvas through a series of motifs drawn ephemerally, evoking a connection between the past, the now, the future, and the infinite.
In 2022, Koizumi began work on the “Locus” series (Center of Power).
Following the “Halo” series, the “Locus” series reflects the influences of the art history of abstract painting, including American Abstract Expressionism, Japanese Mono-ha, Gutai, and Korean Tansaekhwa.
In the “Locus” series, the repetition of motifs from the “enso” series are drawn at the bottom layer, enveloped by the colors that fill the canvas.
The lines crossing the painting change the direction of the motif’s field, making it seem as if one field has been broken up by the lines, or two or three fields have been joined by the lines. The letter-like motifs on the left of the painting are evocative of calligraphy and graffiti, but they are not readable and leave traces of the intense touch of oil paint (oil stick).
The “Locus” series presents an ambivalent representation of the fragmented and the united, the dynamic and the static, the art and the street context, the Western and the Eastern.
In this time of diversity and mixed values, Koizumi’s “Locus” series may be one form of contemporary art.
This will be Koizumi’s second solo exhibition at SH GALLERY, following the “LUMINOUS” exhibition last year. We look forward to seeing you at the exhibition.
